Hang Mua, Ninh Binh: the 500 steps to the viewpoint over the valley

Updated on October 23, 2026

Hang Mua (the "dancing cave") is the most photographed viewpoint in Ninh Binh: a stone staircase of about 486 steps climbs a limestone ridge, from where the Tam Coc river winds between the rice fields and the pinnacles. At the top, a stone dragon watches over the valley. The site is about 5 km from the Tam Coc landing stage; entry costs 100,000 VND per person (Ninh Binh tourism office price, March 2025), and the climb takes 20 to 30 minutes at an easy pace.

Highlights

The panorama over Tam Coc

The panorama over Tam Coc

From the first summit, you see the river, the rice fields and the surrounding mountains over 180 degrees. This is where the best-known photos of the region are taken. The scenery changes with the season: green in June and September, golden at harvest time, brown and misty in winter.

The second summit and the dragon

The second summit and the dragon

A second ridge, a little higher, carries a stone dragon stretching along the rock, and offers the same panorama from a different angle. The path is narrow and partly without railings: go slowly, especially if the stone is wet.

The staircase and the sculptures

The steps, of uneven height, are lined with sculptures of dragons and phoenixes. There are rest landings and a few shady corners at the bottom, but almost no shelter in the upper part.

Price and opening hours

Entry costs 100,000 VND per adult (tourism office price, March 2025); it includes the car park and the path. Online guides announce an opening in the morning, around 6:00, until 17:00 to 19:00 depending on the source: no official hours could be confirmed. Pay in cash if possible.

Tips

  • Come very early (around 6:00 to 7:00) or in the late afternoon, for the light and to avoid the heat and the tour groups from 10:00 to 14:00. Bring good shoes (the steps can be slippery after rain), water and a hat. The climb is not suited to young children or to people who have difficulty walking. Hang Mua combines very well with Tam Coc, as the two are a few minutes apart. See also: Trang An and Ninh Binh in a day from Hanoi.
