Prices seen in October 2026 on resellers' listings and on the official table of March 2025: they vary with the date, the season and what is included.

A tour or on your own?

The guided tour handles the transport, the order of the stops, lunch and the return. Departures are usually between 7:30 and 8:00 from the Old Quarter (for hotels in the area); you come back in the evening, after 18:00. According to the resellers' listings we consulted, the route covers about 108 km in total. The weak point is the "imposed" stops (workshops, shops) and the length of the drives: ask for the detailed programme.

Going on your own by train is possible: Hanoi station is linked to Ninh Binh in a little over 2 hours, with about ten trains a day seen in October 2026 (first departure around 6:00, last around 21:45); check the times and fares with Vietnam Railways, which may change. You then need a taxi, a Grab or a rented scooter to reach Tam Coc, Trang An or Hang Mua, 10 to 20 minutes by road from the station or more.

Tam Coc or Trang An: which boat ride?

Boat on the Trang An river, between limestone cliffs

Almost all day tours include only one of the two boat rides, sometimes both at the price of a long programme. Here is the essentials to decide.

Our choice for a single ride: Trang An if you like caves and more varied landscapes, Tam Coc if you want rice fields and a shorter route. For details, see Tam Coc and Trang An. Online prices vary (some pages announce other fares): ask what is included before paying.

Hang Mua: the viewpoint not to miss

View from Hang Mua over the rice fields and limestone pinnacles of Tam Coc

The roughly 486 steps of Hang Mua give the most famous panorama of the region, at 100,000 VND for entry (March 2025 price). If you visit it together with Tam Coc, put the climb early in the morning or in the late afternoon, not at the hottest hours.

Bai Dinh and Hoa Lu: to round off

The Bai Dinh pagoda is the stop to add if you like large religious sites: allow 2 to 3 hours. Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of the 10th century, is often on the programme of the tours. Both add driving and walking time to an already long day: do not do everything if you want to enjoy the boat.

A typical day

  • 7:30 to 8:00: departure from the Old Quarter.
  • 10:00: arrival in Ninh Binh, first stop (Hoa Lu or Hang Mua).
  • Noon: local lunch.
  • 13:30: boat ride (Tam Coc or Trang An).
  • 16:00: last stop (Bai Dinh or bike ride).
  • 17:00: return to Hanoi, arriving around 19:00.

The order varies with the agency: some programmes start with the boat to avoid the crowds.

What is included or not

  • Tickets: depending on the offer, they are included or to be paid on site. Check the boat and Hang Mua.
  • Lunch: often included in group offers, sometimes extra.
  • Tips: the tip for the boat rower is not included; 50,000 to 100,000 VND per boat is the usual order of magnitude.
  • Transfer: a drop-off at the hotel is not always included; check the drop-off point.
  • Shop stops: ask whether the programme includes visits to workshops.

When to go

From March to May and from September to November, the weather is pleasant. The rice is green in June and golden at harvest, in May to June and in September to October. Summer is hot and humid, winter cool and misty. Off season, there are fewer people.

Which option to choose?

  • First visit, average budget: the small-group tour with lunch.
  • Family: a private driver, who lets you stop when you want.
  • Independent: the train then a taxi, with a budget for tickets.
  • Photographer: sleep on site and climb Hang Mua at sunrise.
