A street in the Old Quarter, Hanoi

Morning: lake, temple and mausoleum

Start early at Hoan Kiem Lake: around 6 or 7 am, locals exercise by the water and the light is soft. Cross Huc Bridge; the entrance to Ngoc Son Temple is paid, so take it only if you want to go in. Then have breakfast in the Old Quarter: pho or banh mi.

Take a Grab to the Temple of Literature, normally open from 8:00 to 17:00, ticket 70,000 VND; visit it before the groups. If the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is open on the day of your visit, do it in late morning with the One Pillar Pagoda; it closes on certain days and for maintenance periods, so read the page before building the day around it.

Afternoon: Hoa Lo and the French Quarter

Have lunch of bun cha or pho, then go to Hoa Lo Prison, 15 minutes from the lake. It is the most striking museum in the centre, ticket 50,000 VND according to guides. End the afternoon at St Joseph's Cathedral and the French Quarter, with a coffee break on the neighbourhood's terraces.

Evening: water puppets and the Old Quarter

The water puppet theatre, by the lake, is Hanoi's classic show; book ahead for good seats. On weekend evenings, follow up with the night market and the pedestrian streets of the Old Quarter. To eat like a local, a street food tour saves time.

If the weather is bad or you want to slow down

  • Rain: replace the mausoleum with the Vietnamese Women's Museum or the National Museum of History; both are indoors.
  • With children: keep the lake, the Temple of Literature and the puppets; skip Hoa Lo, whose content is harsh.
  • With a guide: a guided walking or motorbike tour groups several of these stops into half a day and avoids the Grab rides.

What to know before you go

  • Keep cash: several entry tickets are paid in cash.
  • Dress properly for temples and pagodas: shoulders and knees covered.
  • Cross the street slowly and at a steady pace; if in doubt, see our guide to scams in Hanoi.
  • One day is short: if you have more time, move on to Hanoi in 2 days.

Going further

With one more day, add West Lake, Quan Thanh Temple and Tran Quoc Pagoda, or head to Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh in a day.

FAQ

Is one day enough for Hanoi? Yes for the essentials of the centre: a lake, a temple, a museum, a street meal and a show. For the museums in the west or West Lake, allow a second day.

What is the best order for the day? Start with the lake early in the morning, then the Temple of Literature and the mausoleum (morning), Hoa Lo in the afternoon, and book the puppets for the evening.

Do I need to book tickets? Not for the Temple of Literature or Hoa Lo, which are paid on site. Book water puppets and guided tours in advance.

How do I get between stops? The centre can be covered on foot, but the western stops (Temple of Literature, mausoleum) are best done by Grab, simple and cheap.
