Vietnam Fine Arts Museum Hanoi: lacquer, prints and contemporary art (2026)

Updated on October 24, 2026

The Vietnam Fine Arts Museum occupies a French colonial-era building on Nguyen Thai Hoc street, near the Temple of Literature. It gathers ancient sculpture, ceramics, folk prints, silk paintings and lacquer, as well as 20th-century art. It is a quiet museum, smaller than those in Paris, visited in 1 to 1.5 hours. The adult ticket is 40,000 VND and the museum opens at 8:30 and closes at 17:00 according to most recent guides; some mention a Monday closure. It pairs well with the Temple of Literature, about 1 km away, in a 2-day stay.

Highlights

Ancient sculpture and ceramics

Ancient sculpture and ceramics

Wooden and stone Buddhist statues and ceramics from several dynasties, such as celadon bowls from the Ly era (11th-12th centuries), show Vietnamese art before the 20th century.

Lacquer and silk paintings

Two emblematic techniques of the country: lacquer paintings with deep reflections, and paintings on silk. 20th-century artists mix local traditions and European influences in them.

Folk prints

Colourful woodblock prints, such as those of Dong Ho and Hang Trong, evoke Tet images and village life. They are graphic and very accessible.

The thousand-armed Bodhisattva

Among the best-known works, a large polychrome wooden statue with a thousand arms and eyes, an old Buddhist piece. It justifies the detour on its own if you like religious art.
