Vietnam Military History Museum in Hanoi: new site, opening hours and 2026 ticket

Updated on October 24, 2026

The Vietnam Military History Museum left its old site on Dien Bien Phu Street, near the citadel, towards the end of 2024: it now occupies a large modern building at Tay Mo (Nam Tu Liem district), about 15 km from Hoan Kiem Lake, or 30 minutes by taxi. It is open from 8am to 4:30pm, closed on Monday and Friday, and the ticket costs 40,000 VND (ticket sales began on 11 April 2025). Four permanent galleries tell the country's military history from its origins to 2024, and the outdoor courtyard displays aircraft, helicopters and tanks. One guide estimates 4 hours to see everything in detail; 2 hours is enough for the essentials. See also: the Thang Long Citadel, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Hoa Lo Prison.

Highlights

The Flag Tower, at the old site

The Flag Tower, at the old site

The 1812 tower marks the museum's old site on Dien Bien Phu Street, near the citadel. This photo shows the old site: the current museum is at Tay Mo, far from the centre, so do not rely on this address.

The permanent galleries

Four galleries follow Vietnam's military history from its origins to 2024; a large theatre is devoted to the Battle of Dien Bien Phu (1954), according to one guide.

The tanks and aircraft

The outdoor courtyard displays aircraft, helicopters, tanks and cannons, including, according to one guide, an American CH-47 Chinook helicopter and an M-48 tank; a MiG-21 is shown in one gallery, along with a T-54B tank linked to the capture of the presidential palace in Saigon in 1975. The exact inventory may change.

The large modern building

The building, designed by a Japanese firm, covers nearly 40 hectares; you walk a lot between the ticket office, the galleries and the courtyard.

Practical info

Tips

  • Check the address: many guides, maps and booking sites still show the old Dien Bien Phu Street site. Allow 30 minutes by taxi from the centre and a queue of up to 20 minutes, especially at weekends. There is little to eat on site (a café outside the entrance according to one guide): bring water. Discounts (for example 20,000 VND for students aged 16 and over, according to an airline website) and free entry (under 16, 80 and over) are not confirmed by an official source: ask at the ticket window. This museum tells the story from the Vietnamese point of view.

How to get there

Km 6+500, road CT03, Tay Mo, Nam Tu Liem district, Hanoi, about 15 km from the centre. Allow 30 minutes by taxi or Grab from Hoan Kiem Lake; we could not confirm a direct bus line. Old site: 28A Dien Bien Phu Street, Ba Dinh district (the museum left it at the end of 2024).

Opening hours

Best: Weekday mornings
8:00am-4:30pm, closed Monday and Friday (older sources gave 8:00am-11:30am and 1:00pm-4:30pm at the old site; to be confirmed)
