Night train or bus: how to get to Sapa?

  • Night train. Departures from Hanoi between 21:35 and 22:00 or so, arrival in Lao Cai between 5:30 and 6:10, which is 8 to 9 hours door to door with the transfer. Tickets cost about 290,000 VND (hard seat), 540,000 VND (6-berth sleeper), 790,000 VND (4-berth sleeper); private trains run from 45 to 65 $ for a 4-berth cabin, and the Victoria Express exceeds 130 $. Lao Cai is about 35 km from Sapa: allow 1 hour by minibus (40,000 to 50,000 VND).
  • Expressway bus. The "limousine" minibus takes about 5h30 to 6h on the Noi Bai-Lao Cai expressway, for 13 to 18 $ (320,000 to 450,000 VND); the night bus takes 6 to 7 hours for 11 to 15 $.
  • Private car. 5 to 5h30, 130 to 180 $ for the car.

The train is more picturesque but noisy; the bus is faster and comfortable in a limousine. If you want to save a hotel night in Hanoi, take the night train.

The 2-day trek: the safe choice

The classic circuit walks down the Muong Hoa valley through the villages of Lao Chai and Ta Van, among terraced rice fields: about 12 km and 6 hours of walking on the first day, a night in a homestay with a family, then back to Sapa the next day. It is the best option for a first trek. See our page Sapa: rice terraces, villages and hikes. A local guide is essential to find the way and understand village life.

The 3-day trek: if you have time

An extra day lets you add a second village or a longer walk and spend a second night in a homestay. It is better if you are comfortable walking; otherwise two days are enough. If you want to add the Fansipan cable car (the country's highest peak), allow an extra half day.

Homestay or hotel?

A homestay with a valley family is simple: mattress on the floor or a small bed, shared meals, basic sanitation. It is inexpensive, and it is the best way to meet the locals. A hotel is more comfortable but loses authenticity: in winter, check the heating.

What is included or not: the pitfalls

  • Meals. Trek meals are generally included; drinks are not.
  • Transport. Almost never included in the basic trek; in a package, check whether it is a bus or a train, and the class.
  • The guide. Check whether he or she is local and whether the group is small.
  • Village entry fees. Some village fees are paid on the spot: ask.
  • The dates. Thick mist can hide the landscape from December to February.
  • Equipment. Walking shoes with a good grip, a raincoat, warm clothes: it is cool in the evening, even in summer.
  • The sellers. Village sellers sometimes follow you: a polite "no thank you" is enough.

When to go?

May and June: the rice fields are flooded and green. September and early October: the rice ripens and turns golden, the best time for photos. December to February: cold and fog, sometimes very thick. Book ahead in September-October. See our guide to the best time to visit Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Sapa.

Which offer to choose?

  • Tight budget: the 2-day trek alone, with the expressway bus.
  • Save a night: night train there and a 2-day trek.
  • More walking: the 3-day trek.
  • Comfort: private train or limousine, hotel rather than homestay.
  • Few days: see our guide to the Ha Giang loop to compare with another excursion in the North.

Booking at the best time

Book a few days to a few weeks ahead depending on the season, and confirm the weather before departure. Train times, prices and inclusions change: confirm them on the listing before you book.
