Sapa: rice terraces, villages and hikes from Hanoi (when to go in 2026)
Sapa is a hill station in northern Vietnam (Lao Cai province, at about 1,500 m), around 5.5 to 6 hours from Hanoi by expressway and about 8 hours by night train. People come for the terraced rice fields of the Muong Hoa valley, the Hmong and Dao minority villages and one- or two-day hikes. The terraces are most beautiful green from June to August and golden from mid-September to early October, just before the harvest; by late October they are largely harvested. To book, see the Sapa trek from Hanoi; for the mountain, Fansipan and its cable car.
Highlights

The rice terraces of the Muong Hoa valley
Fields planted in steps up the slopes, best seen from the trail rather than the road. The colour depends on the season and the year: green in summer, golden before the harvest, bare and misty in winter. Dates vary with altitude and weather.

The villages of Lao Chai and Ta Van
The classic hikes link these villages across the valley (about 12 km and 6 hours according to our trek article). Residents sell crafts and embroidered textiles; a homestay is the most common way to spend the night.

Trails and views
Several trails lead down into the valley from Sapa town. Bring good shoes: the paths are muddy and slippery after rain.
Cat Cat, the nearest village
About 2 to 3 km from town, reached on foot downhill in 25 to 35 minutes. It is a heavily developed village with a ticket office, performances and shops; guides quote around 150,000 VND to enter, but other sources give other amounts: ask at the ticket window.

Tips
- Choose a local guide or an agency that states the duration, group size and accommodation; trek prices run from about $63 to $105 according to our article (October 2026). Keep a waterproof jacket and a warm layer, even in summer: it often rains in July and August and fog hides the views. Distances are hard to judge: the ride from the Lao Cai station or bus stop to Sapa takes about an hour. Book your nights in high season (September, October, weekends).
How to get there
Sapa (Sa Pa), Lao Cai province, about 315 km from Hanoi. Expressway bus or "limousine" to Sapa in 5.5 to 6 hours; night train Hanoi–Lao Cai (about 8 hours) then a minibus of about 35 km to Sapa. Details in the trek article.
