Hanoi Opera House: Visit, Shows and Tickets (Closed for Renovation?)
The Hanoi Opera House, at 1 Trang Tien Street, is a neoclassical theatre built by the French between 1901 and 1911, inspired by the Opéra Garnier in Paris. It seats about 870. One important point: Vietnamese press articles from January 2026 announce its closure for a major restoration of about two years, and we could not confirm a precise reopening date. Check before planning a visit or a show: the outside, however, can be seen freely from the square. Outside renovation periods, you either take a guided tour by day or attend a show in the evening (concerts, dance, opera). See also: the French Quarter, the water puppet theatre and Hoan Kiem Lake.
Highlights

The façade
Columns, balconies and a French-style dome in pale yellow, on a square where several avenues meet. You can photograph it without a ticket, by day or at night when the building is lit.

The building seen from the square
The square in front of the Opera House is a meeting place for Hanoians, with small gardens; it is also the best distance for framing the whole façade.
The hall and the staircase
When visits are possible, they show the lobby, the grand staircase and the Italian-style auditorium. The programme and prices have varied between sources (see below).
The shows
Classical concerts, ballet, opera and visiting productions, with smart dress required. Seats range from 200,000 VND to over 1,500,000 VND depending on the source and the show.

Tips
- According to guides, daytime guided tours cost about 120,000 to 400,000 VND, and evening shows 200,000 to 1,500,000 VND; these figures do not come from a confirmed official source and may have changed. Tours run at fixed times on non-performance days; ask at the box office or the theatre management before making the trip. Dress properly for a show. If the interior is closed, make do with the outside, Trang Tien Street and the neighbouring cafés.
