Hanoi's weekend pedestrian streets: where, when and what to do (2026)

Updated on October 24, 2026

At weekends, traffic is cut around Hoan Kiem Lake and in several neighbouring Old Quarter streets: you walk in the middle of the road, it is free, and it is when locals come out. The usual schedule runs from Friday evening at 7pm to Sunday midnight, starting an hour earlier in winter (according to press articles from 2020 and 2023; the date of the seasonal change is not given and could not be confirmed in October 2026). Allow 1 to 2 hours. The zone has been extended several times (eight streets and three alleys added in 2020), so the exact perimeter can change: look for the barriers and signs on site. Highlights

The walk around Hoan Kiem Lake

With no cars or motorbikes, the loop around the lake (under 2 km) becomes one big family promenade: children on scooters, groups dancing, couples on the benches. Ngoc Son Temple, lit up at night, is the landmark.

The pedestrian zone continues north along Hang Dao and Hang Ngang streets as far as Dong Xuan Market, where the night market sets up. This is where the crowd is densest, between stalls, terraces and passers-by.

Street entertainment

On weekend evenings you generally come across music, street games and demonstrations; the programme changes from week to week and is not published in advance, so do not count on one particular show.

Cafés and street food

Old Quarter terraces and stalls selling skewers, ice cream and cold drinks are on every corner. To eat without nasty surprises, a guided food tour is still the simplest solution.

Tips

  • Access is free. Taxis and Grab cars cannot enter: ask to be dropped at the edge of the zone and finish on foot. Cross at a steady pace without stopping: motorbikes steer around pedestrians. Keep your bag and phone in front of you, as crowds attract pickpockets. On public holidays the programme can change: for 30 April to 3 May 2026, the press announced extended opening of the lake area (from 7am on 30 April to midnight on 3 May) with the usual schedule in the Old Quarter. If the hours matter to you, ask your hotel the day before.

How to get there

Hoan Kiem Lake and neighbouring streets, Hoan Kiem ward, Hanoi. From Old Quarter hotels everything is on foot (5 to 10 minutes). By Grab, get out on the edge of the zone, for example on Dinh Tien Hoang or Hang Bong street.

Opening hours

Best: Saturday evening, 7:30pm-10pm
Friday 7:00pm to Sunday midnight in summer (an hour earlier in winter; hours to be confirmed, may change on public holidays)
