Tet in Hanoi: 2027 Dates, Atmosphere, Flower Market and What Closes
Tet, the Lunar New Year, is the great festival of Vietnam. In 2027 the first day falls on Saturday 6 February 2027; the eve, 5 February, is the main moment for families. In August 2026 the Ministry of Culture backed a proposal for a seven-day holiday, from 4 to 10 February 2027, but it has not been finally adopted: the calendar may change. In Hanoi, the weeks before Tet are the liveliest: flower markets, peach branches and kumquat trees, red and gold decorations, crowded streets. During the 3 to 4 days of the festival the city empties, many shops and restaurants close and transport is full. Highlights

Hang Ma Street and the decorations
The streets of the Old Quarter fill with lanterns, garlands and red paper before the festival. It is also where to buy paper offerings. Prices rise as Tet approaches.
The flower markets
Temporary markets of flowers, flowering peach trees and kumquats appear in the city a few days before Tet. The exact places and dates are announced by the city each year; we could not confirm them for 2027.
Tet Eve
Families gather at home; public festivities (shows, fireworks) are organised around Hoan Kiem Lake in some years, subject to confirmation.
The Perfume Pagoda
The Chua Huong pilgrimage begins at the start of the lunar year: in 2026 the festival opened on the 6th day of the 1st lunar month (22 February 2026) and lasted until 11 May. For 2027 the dates are yet to be announced.

Tips
- Book hotels, trains and flights well in advance, because prices rise and seats go fast around Tet. Many restaurants and shops in the Old Quarter close for several days, sometimes more than a week; keep some supplies and check before going out. Excursions (Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh) may be cancelled or cost more; read the cancellation terms. A red envelope ("li xi") is a traditional gift; if you are invited, a small present is appreciated. Museums and monuments change their hours or close: check before you come.
How to get there
Throughout the city; decorations are concentrated in the Old Quarter (Hang Ma Street) and around Hoan Kiem Lake. Flower markets: places announced each year.
