Ngoc Son Temple and Huc Bridge: opening hours, ticket and tips

Updated on October 23, 2026

Ngoc Son Temple, the "Temple of the Jade Mountain", sits on Jade Islet in the north of Hoan Kiem Lake. You reach it by Huc Bridge, a wooden bridge painted red. The shrine, rebuilt in the 19th century, honours in particular General Tran Hung Dao, who defeated the Mongols in the 13th century, and Van Xuong, protector of scholars. The visit is short: 20 to 30 minutes is enough. Entry is paid, but only for the temple: the bridge and the walk around the lake stay free. Hours and price vary depending on the source (see below), so bring cash. See also: Hoan Kiem Lake, the water puppet theatre and the Old Quarter.

Highlights

Huc Bridge

Huc Bridge

Its name evokes the light of the rising sun. The red wooden bridge links the north bank to the islet; it is free and it is the first photo spot, early in the morning or after dark when it is lit. The ticket is only asked after the bridge.

The temple and its courtyard

Behind the gate, a shaded courtyard leads to the altars and halls of worship, where incense and offerings burn. Visitors should stay discreet: dress properly (shoulders and knees covered) and keep your voice down.

The preserved giant turtle

The temple displays the preserved specimen of one of the last giant turtles of the lake, which died in 2016. It is tied to the legend of the golden turtle and the sword, told on the lake's page.

The Pen Tower and the inkwell

Near the entrance, a stone tower shaped like a brush and a gate shaped like an inkwell symbolise literature. They can be seen from the bank without a ticket.

Practical info

Tips

  • The adult ticket is sold near the bridge; sources quote between 30,000 and 50,000 VND, children free (age limit varies), and the counter sometimes accepts cash only. These figures could not be confirmed with an official source in October 2026: check the notice at the counter. If you only want the photo, stay on the bridge, which is free. Avoid improvised "guides" who offer a visit or a cyclo tour.

How to get there

Jade Islet, Hoan Kiem Lake, Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi. On foot from the Old Quarter (5 to 10 minutes from Hang Dao); Huc Bridge is at the north-east corner of the lake, Dinh Tien Hoang Street.

Opening hours

Best: At opening time
Daily during the day, about 7:00-18:00 according to some sources (others report longer weekend opening; check on site)
