Tay Ho, Hanoi: the West Lake Neighbourhood, Cafés, Restaurants and Where to Stay
Tay Ho is the district that runs along the eastern and south-eastern shore of West Lake (Ho Tay), north of central Hanoi. It is home to expats, lakeside cafés, international restaurants and a few large hotels: a calmer, airier Hanoi than the Old Quarter. It is 5 to 7 km from Hoan Kiem Lake, 15 to 25 minutes by Grab depending on traffic. You can spend half a day here (a walk by the lake, a coffee, sunset) or stay for the peace and quiet. See also: West Lake, Tran Quoc Pagoda, where to stay in Hanoi and the Old Quarter.
Highlights

West Lake
The largest lake in the city. A road runs all the way round it: cycling or riding an electric scooter along it is the classic activity, with views over calm water and, in summer, lotus flowers near the banks.

The lakeside cafés and terraces
Cafés set their tables at the water's edge, especially on the Xuan Dieu and Quang An side. Sunset is the most sought-after moment; book or arrive early at weekends.
Restaurants and expat life
Tay Ho has the highest concentration of international restaurants, bakeries and brunch spots: a good choice for a break from the street food of the Old Quarter.
The nearby pagodas
Tran Quoc Pagoda, on an islet linked to the shore by a causeway, is a few minutes away; it has its own page.

Tips
- Hotel and restaurant prices vary widely; we have no official price list, so compare recent reviews. As a base, Tay Ho suits long stays, families and anyone who wants quiet, but not a short first visit: the Old Quarter is a taxi ride away. The shores are calmer on weekdays; on weekend evenings the roads around the lake are busy.
How to get there
Tay Ho district, east shore of West Lake, Hanoi. By Grab or taxi from the Old Quarter (15 to 25 minutes); city buses also serve the area but are less convenient with luggage.
