West Lake Hanoi (Ho Tay): cycling, cafes and sunset

Updated on October 24, 2026

West Lake (Ho Tay) is Hanoi's largest lake: about 500 hectares and a circuit of 15 to 18 km depending on the source. Its shores alternate between pagodas, cafes, restaurants, hotels and promenades; locals come here to breathe, cycle or watch the sun go down. Access is free all day. Allow 2 hours for the bike loop, or 1 hour for a simple walk by the water. The lake is 5 to 8 km from the Old Quarter: the easiest way is to go by Grab, then walk or rent a bike on the spot. The most pleasant area is Tay Ho, and two sites can be visited on the way: Quan Thanh Temple and Tran Quoc Pagoda.

Highlights

At dusk, the light on the water and the city skyline make it the most photogenic moment. The lakeside fills with walkers and terraces.

The road around the lake

A path and a road run along the shore: it is the classic bike loop. Small shops sell drinks and snacks along the way according to guides.

The shore's pagodas and temples
