St Joseph's Cathedral, Hanoi: Opening Hours, Masses and the Café Street
St Joseph's Cathedral, at 40 Nha Chung Street, is the main Catholic church of Hanoi: a neo-Gothic building in dark stone, completed in 1886 by the French, with two square towers and a weathered façade. The interior is plain, with coloured stained glass. The outside and the forecourt are accessible at all times; the interior normally opens only during services and at certain visiting hours, which vary by source (see below). The visit takes 15 to 30 minutes; combine it with the cafés on Nha Tho Street, right next door, and with the Old Quarter. See also: the French Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter.
Highlights

The neo-Gothic façade
Two square towers with pinnacles, pointed-arch portals and stone blackened by the tropical humidity. The forecourt, with its statue, is the classic photo spot; it is often lively late in the day.

The interior and the stained glass
The tall nave, the gilded altars and the stained glass give a quiet atmosphere. If the door is open, go in quietly, without flash, and do not disturb worshippers at prayer.
The Masses
Sources give daily Masses early in the morning and late in the afternoon, and several Masses on Sunday, including one in French or English depending on the source. Times differ from page to page: confirm with the parish (tel. +84 4 3828 5967, a number quoted by one guide).
The cafés of Nha Tho Street
The small street running alongside the cathedral is lined with cafés with terraces and small shops: a popular stop, busier at weekends and in the evening.

Tips
- Proper dress is expected (shoulders and knees covered). The visiting hours we found do not agree (8:00 to 11:00 and 14:00 to 17:00 or 20:00 Monday to Saturday, with longer slots on Sunday); no source is official or reliably dated. If the door is closed, the outside remains the main interest. Avoid visiting during Mass unless you are attending it.
How to get there
40 Nha Chung Street, Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi. On foot from Hoan Kiem Lake (5 to 10 minutes via Ly Quoc Su Street); Nha Tho Street runs parallel to the church.
